J.R. Liggett’s shampoo bars were the first shampoo bars I tried after learning that shampoo bars were a thing. To be honest, I tried J.R. Liggett’s because it was the first shampoo bar that showed up on Amazon. Alas, convenience wins again.

Anyways, over the years I have tried multiple different shampoo bars from both Amazon and local producers. I’m not going to lie, there have been a few local shampoo bars that I have really enjoyed but trying to get ahold of the makers proves to be a pain in the butt sometimes when I need a refill.

Again, the convenience of Amazon wins. I am back to using J.R. Liggett’s original shampoo bar and I really like it. Here’s why.

J.R. Liggett's shampoo bar

Good For My Hair Type

On the package, it states J.R. Liggett’s original formula is good for permed or colored hair and naturally curly hair.

It should be noted that I have thick, wavy hair that is on the dry side but turns oily when unwashed for a few days. If your hair is different, you may not have the same experience as I have with J.R. Liggett’s shampoo bar.

Ingredients

There are not that many ingredients, and I can pronounce all of them!

  • Saponified olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Essential oils:
    • Rose
    • Lavender
    • Spearmint

Price

As of Feb. 14, 2020, the price on Amazon is $9.99 per bar. I think that’s a fair price, don’t you?

Wash Frequency

I find that I only need to wash my hair a couple of times a week. My hair still looks nice and fresh up to three days after washing, which is awesome because sometimes I just don’t feel like showering!

Longevity

You get a pretty substantial bar of shampoo, so it will last a pretty long time. As I just mentioned, I only need to wash my hair a couple of times a week, so this bar lasts a good 3 months or longer. Obviously, how long it lasts depends on usage, but a safe estimation is over 2 months if used by a single person.

On the package, it states that one bar has the approximate number of usages as a 24oz bottle of shampoo. After a quick google search, a 24oz bottle should last at least a month with daily use, so my approximation of this shampoo bar lasting around 2 months is pretty accurate, I think.

Packaging

The packaging is 100% recyclable which I love. Also, I use it to store my shampoo bar in the cupboard when I’m not using it in the shower.

Now, you don’t have to store your shampoo bar outside of the shower when not in use, but I live in a house with a lot of people and a lot of showers are taken on a daily basis so just to be on the safe side, I store it in the cupboard (not everyone has made the switch to shampoo bars yet).

Lather-a-plenty!

This might be my favorite aspect of J.R. Liggett’s. It is really sudsy. My affinity for sudsy-ness might stem from my past use of traditional bottle shampoo, which was not shy with the bubbles.

Lack of suds is the main reason why I do not some other shampoo bars. Not to worry though, JR Liggitt’s is lather a plenty!

Common Complaint

I have read other reviews of this shampoo bar on Amazon and other websites and a common complaint are people developing a waxy build-up on hair and scalp. I have yet to experience this, but since I have used other shampoo bars throughout, I haven’t used this one exclusively or consistently until now.  I will update this section if I end up developing a waxy build-up, or if there has been any other negative change.

I highly recommend this shampoo bar to anyone with thick, curly(ish) hair, and is looking to try a different type of shampoo.

I use Ligget’s and I love it. I only wish it was available locally and I didn’t have to order it. I bought the trial sizes first so I could try different ones and see which I like the best and it came with a travel pouch and a plastic bar saver. They also have a bar set that comes with a full size wooden bar saver.
I have a scalp that gets irritated easily. Sometimes with little blister like bumps (tmi) I don’t have any of that when I use Ligget’s.
